You take a hit from your new vape, and instead of "smooth," you get a scratchy feeling. This is usually not a defect, but a mix of nicotine, technique, dry mucous membranes, or overheating.
If you want to quickly check which models and series you are actually using, take a look at our RandM Overview.
1) If it scratches immediately with the first puff
Then it's almost always too much irritation at once.
-
If you've been pulling hard and deep since the start, then it's pulling technique.
Do this: Pull gently for 2 to 3 seconds, don't "rip," then pause for 5 to 10 seconds. -
If you've rarely/never vaped or are sensitive, then it's often nicotine strength/throat hit.
Do this: Vape less frequently, take longer breaks. If you are consistently sensitive, next time choose a profile that doesn't tempt you to take continuous puffs. -
If you take several puffs in a row, then the coil is getting too hot.
Do this: Reduce puffs, take breaks. If you're a "session" type: put the device down in between instead of continuously vaping. -
If it's worse in winter or in rooms with heated air, then it's dryness.
Do this: Drink water, air out the room briefly. No magic, but it works immediately. -
If it's significantly worse after coffee, energy drinks, alcohol, or on an empty stomach, then it's circulation + irritation threshold.
Do this: Eat/drink first, then vape. And most importantly, slower. -
If it only scratches outdoors/in the cold, then it's cold + thick liquid + condensation.
Do this: Warm the device in your hand, take short puffs, wipe the mouthpiece dry briefly. -
If the flavor becomes flatter or seems slightly "dry", then it's usually an overheating pattern (continuous vaping) or liquid wicking isn't keeping up.
Do this: Take breaks, shorter puffs, store the device upright. -
If it gurgles or becomes damp/spits at the same time, then it's often liquid in the airflow channel due to storage.
Do this: Store upright. Let it stand briefly before vaping. Wipe the mouthpiece. - If it scratches after continuous puffs: Take a break.
- If it scratches in dry air: Drink water + ventilate.
- If it scratches after flat storage: store upright, mouthpiece dry.
- If it persistently scratches chemically despite everything: Do not continue using the device, replace it.
2) If it starts to scratch after a few minutes
Then it is very often overheating or dry mucous membranes.
3) If it scratches only in certain situations
4) If it suddenly starts to scratch after a few days, even though it was fine before
5) If it remains chemical, metallic, or persistently harsh
Then it is no longer "normal throat hit".
If this remains independent of technique and environment, then it is either an outlier/defect or something is wrong with the device/batch.
Do this: Don't keep "testing it out." Change the device.

FAQ
Why does a new vape scratch more than my old one?
You often unconsciously draw differently, and new coils/setups react more sensitively to hard pulling and continuous puffs.
Is scratching a sign of too much nicotine?
It can be, but not necessarily. Often, it's simply vaping technique + dry mucous membranes. If nausea/dizziness occurs as well: then yes, too much.
Does changing the flavor help?
Yes, but not as an excuse. First fix technique and timing, then tweak the profile.
When is it more likely a defect?
If it remains extremely harsh/chemical from the start and does not change with breaks, gentler puffs, drinking, and proper storage.
Check for authenticity if something seems "abnormal" to you
If the scratching remains chemical, metallic, or persistently harsh, even though you have diligently followed the pulling technique, taken breaks, hydrated, and stored it properly, then the next logical step is to check for authenticity. Not out of panic, but because it immediately rules out a source of error.
